Soft for everyone
“True luxury begins with respect,” says Ashtari Carpets, the Antwerp-based specialist in handmade rugs. This value is shared by fashion designer Tim Van Steenbergen, who has long championed transparency and fair working conditions through his sustainable fashion label REantwerp.
The two have now joined forces to develop Gradient, a rug that plays with light and shadow, colour and intensity.
Yet the softness of this rug, produced by Nepalese artisans, is expressed above all in a symbolic sense. For many years, Ashtari Carpets has worked closely with GoodWeave, the internationally recognised organisation dedicated to combating child labour and forced labour in the rug industry.
“For me, designing today no longer starts with a sketch alone,” says Tim Van Steenbergen. “It begins with the question: who makes it, using which techniques, under what conditions, with which materials, and with what knowledge?”
