Custom Berber Carpet Project in Amsterdam — 49 m² of Bespoke Elegance
We recently realized a remarkable bespoke Berber carpet for a private home in Amsterdam — a true marriage of design, architecture, and artisan craft. Measuring nearly 7 × 7 meters (about 49 m²), this carpet was tailored in a freeform, organic shape to follow the architectural contours of the space.
Every stage of the project — from concept sketches to the finishing touches — was a close collaboration among the client, architect, and our team at Ashtari Carpets. In this article, we walk you through the materials, craftsmanship, and design decisions that turned a large floor custom carpet into a functional art piece.
Project Vision & Design Collaboration
The client and architect approached us wanting a statement carpet that would:
-
Integrate seamlessly into a room with curved walls or irregular geometry
-
Radiate understated luxury and warmth
-
Be crafted with top-quality, natural materials
We proposed a custom Berber carpet in 100% natural wool, renowned for its durability and soft luster. The wool selected came from specially raised sheep, giving the finished surface a subtle sheen reminiscent of silk — but with all the functional benefits of wool.
To match the architecture, the interior architects designed a freeform outline rather than a conventional rectangle, allowing the carpet to “hug” interior boundaries and reinforce spatial flow.
Materials & Craftsmanship
-
Wool Quality & Source: We used premium-grade, tightly spun wool with exceptional fiber integrity. This yields a gentle glow, added resilience, and long-term stability.
-
Handwoven Technique: The carpet was hand-knotted or handwoven (depending on your workshop method) to ensure each knot, or weave, aligned with design curvature and structural integrity.
-
Contour Detailing & Finishing: Edges were carefully finished with hidden binding, ensuring a clean transition to adjacent flooring surfaces without visual disruption.
The entire piece required specialized weaving tables and careful handling, particularly due to its scale and irregular shape.
Installation & Impact
Once crafted, transporting and installing a carpet of nearly 49 m² with curved edges is a logistical feat. Our installation team worked in tandem with the architect to place the carpet exactly as envisioned — preserving tension, shape, and alignment.
The end result: a seamless, sculptural carpet that grounds the interior, adds acoustic dampening, and becomes a focal point without overwhelming the space.
Why Choose a Bespoke Berber Carpet?
-
Tailored Fit: Standard carpets often leave awkward gaps; bespoke shapes adapt exactly to your space.
-
Elevated Aesthetic: The organic lines and natural wool create a design-forward statement.
-
Longevity: High-quality wool and precision crafting ensure results that age gracefully.
-
Holistic Integration: The carpet becomes part of the architecture rather than an add-on.
